The Gospel According to Rocky

Was watching Rocky Balboa tonight and was stopped in my tracks by a scene in Rocky's locker room just before the big exhibition fight. Had to rewind on the DVR and play it again. One of his entourage was reading from the Bible, quoting Zechariah 4:6.

And the passage ended with The Lord Jesus Christ. Huh? In Zechariah? In the Old Testament? Really?

I must say, I have seen the movie before and missed that line. I cannot wait for classes on Tuesday to tell my professors about the value of a good seminary education.

I love that movie. I saw it in the theater when I was in the 6th or 7th grade. My husband is a decade younger than myself and had never seen it, so we rented it a few months ago. He was genuinely surprised at how good it was. The sequels that followed completely lost the tender sadness of the first. People tend to think of a comic book Rocky as a result. There's a reason it won Best Picture that year. (I know that was not the point of your post, but it's not often I get to discuss the first Rocky movie.)

I loved the first Rocky movie as well, one of my favorites. It was just that last one is not theologically sound and none have been as good as the first!
